This is a large-scale medical officer recruitment drive by the Limpopo Department of Health, offering 227 shift-based posts for qualified medical practitioners across numerous hospitals in the province. The roles are spread across three grades, with posts allocated to a wide range of district and regional hospitals, from tertiary centres like Pietersburg and Mankweng to smaller facilities such as Evuxakeni and Witpoort. Successful candidates will be expected to provide comprehensive medical care within a hospital setting, working flexible shifts including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and to perform commuted overtime as operational needs require.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. The department has set experience requirements according to grade: Grade 1 posts require less than five years of appropriate post-registration experience; Grade 2 posts require a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 posts require at least ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents, and must possess a valid driver's licence, except for people with disabilities. Computer literacy in MS Office tools and virtual meeting platforms is also required, along with a skill declaration form to be attached to the application.
The key performance areas are broad and patient-centred. Medical officers will provide clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, conduct ward rounds, and deliver outreach services across the province, including at special events and during disaster responses. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards, and keep up to date through Continuous Professional Development as required by the HPCSA. Record-keeping is essential, as is participation in the department's Quality Improvement Programme, conducting clinical audits, and following clinical protocols. Senior post holders may be required to supervise, instruct, and train junior medical officers and registrars. Additional duties may be allocated by supervisors without boundary restrictions.
The department is looking for candidates with sound clinical knowledge across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level, as well as strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills. A good understanding of medical ethics, clinical governance, and data collection and analysis is essential. The ability to work independently after hours without supervision and to use resources rationally is also important. These positions are graded as medical officer posts with an all-inclusive remuneration package, and an additional rural allowance may be payable depending on the hospital's classification as an ISRDS node. The posts are subject to the inherent requirements of shift work, and commuted overtime is approved by the Accounting Officer based on operational needs. This is an excellent opportunity for both experienced and newly qualified medical practitioners to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo while working across a network of hospitals.
