The Department of Health in Limpopo is advertising a large intake of Medical Officer posts on a shifts basis, offering successful applicants the opportunity to work across a wide network of district and regional hospitals throughout the province. These are fully registered medical practitioner roles within the public health sector, structured across three occupational-specific dispensation grades, with placement at a designated hospital centre depending on the post applied for. The positions are aimed at both relatively newly qualified doctors and experienced medical officers, with opportunities available at many hospitals from larger tertiary-linked facilities to smaller rural institutions. A rural allowance may be payable in addition to the all-inclusive remuneration package for qualifying candidates serving in rural or ISRDS node areas.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must already be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Experience requirements are grade-dependent: Grade 1 posts are for practitioners with less than five years of appropriate post-registration experience; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires at least ten years of such experience. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The inherent requirements of the job include a willingness and ability to work shifts, flexible hours, night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as performing commuted overtime when operational needs require it, as approved by the department’s Accounting Officer. Computer literacy is essential, covering MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms, and a valid driver’s licence is required except where a disability prevents this. A skill declaration form must be attached to the application.
The successful medical officers will be expected to provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, across designated clinical areas, commensurate with maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. Duties include performing ward rounds, participating in outreach programmes, delivering medical services at special events or provincial operations, and responding to emergency calls within stipulated timeframes, including during disasters and disaster management situations. Practitioners must uphold best clinical practice in line with quality standards, engage in continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA, and maintain accurate clinical records according to minimum standards. They will also participate in the departmental and hospital quality improvement programmes, ensure adherence to clinical protocols, conduct clinical audits, and contribute to continuing medical education and academic activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Where required, they may coordinate clinical responsibilities and provide supervision, instruction, and training to junior medical officers and registrars in one or more designated clinical areas. Additional duties allocated by the supervisor may be performed anywhere in the province, reflecting the flexible and responsive nature of the role.
Candidates should possess sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level, as well as a strong understanding of the legal aspects relevant to medical practice in South Africa. Good leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are important, along with the ability to collect and analyse data. Practitioners must demonstrate sound medical ethics, knowledge of clinical governance, the capacity to work after hours independently without supervision, and rational use of resources. These posts offer a meaningful career in public service medicine, with the chance to make a significant impact in underserved communities across Limpopo.
