This vacancy is for a Medical Officer position on a shift system, with as many as 227 posts available across numerous hospitals in the Limpopo Department of Health. The roles are spread across three experience-based grades, with Grade 1 offering the most posts, followed by Grade 2 and Grade 3. Successful candidates will be placed at one of the many designated hospitals in the province, ranging from regional and tertiary facilities to district and rural hospitals. This is a broad clinical role that requires a qualified and experienced medical professional who is willing to work flexibly, including night duty, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as operational needs demand.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must have current registration with the HPCSA in that category. Experience requirements vary by grade: Grade 1 requires less than five years of appropriate experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for candidates with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be attached. Computer literacy is also essential, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms.

The ideal candidate will have sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level. They must understand and apply the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, demonstrate sound medical ethics, and apply clinical governance principles. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are important, as is the ability to collect and analyse data. The ability to work independently after hours, without supervision, and to use resources rationally is also required.

Key performance areas include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; responding to emergency calls, including during disasters; maintaining best clinical practice through continuous professional development; generating and maintaining medical records; participating in quality improvement programmes; conducting clinical audits; and ensuring clinical protocols are followed. The role also involves participating in continuing medical education and academic activities, and where required, supervising, instructing, and training Medical Officers and Registrars. Candidates must be prepared to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor without boundary restrictions. This is an excellent opportunity for dedicated medical professionals to contribute to public healthcare delivery across Limpopo.
