This is a large-scale recruitment drive for qualified medical officers to fill 227 shift-based posts across numerous public hospitals in Limpopo, with vacancies available at Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 levels. The positions are spread across a wide range of facilities, from major regional hospitals such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, and Tshilidzini to smaller district hospitals like Evuxakeni, Hayani, and Witpoort. Successful candidates will work within the provincial department of health, providing essential medical services in inpatient and outpatient settings, emergency care, and outreach programmes. The role is demanding and requires a commitment to flexible shift work, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the willingness to perform commuted overtime when operational needs require it. These are OSD-graded posts, and an additional rural allowance may be payable in certain identified nodes, depending on the hospital’s location.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Experience requirements are tiered by grade: Grade 1 candidates need less than five years of appropriate experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for candidates with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be submitted. Computer literacy is essential, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms.
The ideal candidate will have sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, for all age groups and both sexes, at district health services level. They must understand and apply the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, demonstrate sound medical ethics, and have a working knowledge of clinical governance. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are also required, along with the ability to collect and analyse data. The role demands independence, particularly the ability to work after hours without supervision, and the rational use of resources.
Key performance areas include providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds; participating in outreach programmes; and delivering medical services at special events or during disaster operations. Medical officers must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards, and keep themselves updated through the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) system as required by the HPCSA. They are responsible for generating and maintaining accurate medical records, participating in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring that clinical protocols are followed. Where required, they will supervise, instruct, and train medical officers and registrars, and they may be allocated additional duties by their supervisor without boundary restrictions. This is an opportunity for dedicated medical professionals to serve in public healthcare across Limpopo, with clear grading based on experience and a structured career path.
