This large-scale recruitment drive seeks 227 qualified medical officers to join the Limpopo Department of Health across a wide network of district and regional hospitals. The posts are structured as shift-based clinical roles, with vacancies distributed across three occupational-specific dispensation grades, reflecting the intended experience level of the appointee. The successful candidates will be placed at one of the many designated hospitals within the province and will form an integral part of the clinical team delivering frontline medical care to communities.
Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must maintain a current registration with the HPCSA. The grading of the post is determined by years of relevant experience after registration: Grade 1 roles are suited to those with less than five years of experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents. Given the nature of the work, a willingness to work shifts, flexible hours, night duty, weekends, and public holidays is essential, as is the capacity to perform overtime when required. Commuted overtime will be arranged according to operational needs. Computer literacy is a must, including basic proficiency with MS packages and virtual meeting platforms, and a valid driver's licence is required unless the applicant has a disability. A skill declaration form must be submitted as part of the application.
The core responsibilities are extensive and centre on providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, within the designated clinical areas. Medical officers will conduct ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events or operations across the province. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times and contribute to disaster management when called upon. Maintaining best practice in line with quality standards is essential, and officers are expected to keep themselves updated through the Continuous Professional Development system as required by the HPCSA. They will generate and maintain accurate clinical records, participate in the department and hospital’s Quality Improvement Programme, conduct clinical audits, and ensure strict adherence to clinical protocols. Additionally, the role involves taking part in continuing medical education and academic activities. Depending on the need, the incumbent may also be required to supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars in a designated clinical area. The post also demands sound clinical knowledge across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups, application of South African medical law, good leadership and communication abilities, budgeting and data analysis skills, sound ethical practice, and the ability to work independently after hours. A rural allowance is available for certain nodes, and the position requires a willingness to serve anywhere in the province without boundary restrictions.
