This vacancy is a large-scale recruitment of Medical Officers to work on a shift system in public hospitals across Limpopo Province. The positions are spread across numerous hospitals and are offered at three levels according to the applicant’s years of experience after registration as an independent medical practitioner. The context is the provincial health department, which requires dedicated clinicians to provide continuous, after-hours and emergency care in both district and regional hospitals. Successful candidates will be expected to work flexible hours, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, and to be available for overtime as operational needs demand.
To be considered, applicants must hold a recognised qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that category. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. The experience threshold determines the level of appointment: those with less than five years of appropriate, recognisable experience after registration enter at the first level; those with at least five years qualify for the second level; and those with at least ten years qualify for the third level. In addition to clinical qualifications, candidates need to be computer literate in MS Office applications and virtual meeting platforms, and must hold a valid driver’s licence unless they have a disability. A skill declaration form is a required part of the application. The working environment also demands the ability to function independently after hours and without direct supervision.
The core duties of the Medical Officer include providing comprehensive clinical care in designated clinical areas, with particular emphasis on emergency care, ward rounds, outreach services and medical support at special events and provincial operations. Medical officers must respond to emergency calls within stipulated timeframes, including in disaster situations, and are expected to maintain best clinical practice in accordance with quality standards. This involves participating in the HPCSA’s Continuing Professional Development system, generating and maintaining accurate medical records, contributing to the department’s quality improvement programmes, and ensuring compliance with clinical protocols. The role also includes conducting clinical audits, participating in continuing medical education and academic activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and, where necessary, supervising and training Medical Officers and Registrars. Finally, incumbents may be required to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor in the province, with no boundary restrictions.
The ideal candidate will have sound clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics across all age groups and sexes at district health services level. A strong understanding of South African medical law, clinical governance, medical ethics and the rational use of resources is essential. Good leadership, communication, presentation and budgeting skills are also important, as is the ability to collect and analyse data. The remuneration package is an all-inclusive one, aligned with the applicable occupation-specific dispensation, and an additional rural allowance may be paid for postings at identified ISRDS nodes. This is a significant opportunity for medical professionals to contribute to public health service delivery in Limpopo, with clear progression between the three experience-based grades.
