This vacancy offers qualified medical professionals the opportunity to join the Limpopo Department of Health as a Medical Officer on a shift-based system, with a total of 227 posts available across numerous hospitals in the province. The role is OSD-graded, meaning appointment level and remuneration are determined by the candidate’s years of appropriate experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner. Successful applicants will be placed at specific district and regional hospitals, ranging from larger centres such as Pietersburg and Mankweng to smaller facilities like Witpoort and Botlokwa, allowing for both urban and rural service contexts)Skip. The post requires a strong commitment to providing comprehensive clinical care within a shift environment, including night duty, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when operational needs demand it.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered in that capacity. Experience thresholds determine the grade: Grade 1 is suited to practitioners with less than five years of post-registration experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The role also demands computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms, as well as a valid driver’s licence unless the applicant has a disability. A skill declaration form must be submitted as part of the application. Beyond clinical expertise, candidates need sound knowledge of medical law, ethics, clinical governance, and the ability to work independently after hours. Leadership, communication, presentation, budgeting, and data analysis skills are also important, along with the rational use of resources and the ability to apply medical theory and practice across all age groups and sexes at district health service level.
The key performance areas are broad and patient-centred. The Medical Officer will provide clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas and will perform ward rounds, outreach programmes, and medical services at special events or operations across the province. Responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, particularly during disasters, is a critical responsibility. The post holder must maintain best clinical practice through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA, generate and maintain accurate medical records, and participate in hospital quality improvement programmes. Clinical audits, adherence to protocols, and involvement in ongoing medical education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels are also expected. Where needed, the Medical Officer will coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars, and perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor without boundary restrictions. This is a demanding but rewarding role for medical professionals seeking to make a meaningful impact in public health within Limpopo, with a rural allowance applicable at selected nodes and a flexible shift system that supports service delivery around the clock.
