The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a large number of Medical Officer posts for shift-based work in hospitals across the province. This is a substantial recruitment drive for 227 positions, with openings distributed across numerous facilities, including regional and district hospitals such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, Kgapane, Mokopane, and many others. The vacancies are structured into three grades based on years of experience, allowing both recently qualified independent practitioners and seasoned medical officers to apply. This is a clinical post within the public health sector, requiring doctors to provide comprehensive medical care in a hospital setting, with an emphasis on emergency care, shift work, and service delivery in rural and underserved communities.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered as such. The experience requirements vary by grade: Grade 1 requires less than five years of relevant experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents. Inherent requirements of the post include a willingness and ability to work shifts, flexible hours, night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the capacity to perform commuted overtime when required and approved by the department. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms is also essential, together with a valid driver’s licence, except for candidates with disabilities. A skill declaration form must be attached to the application.
The role demands a thorough knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, including the legal aspects relevant to medicine in South Africa. Successful candidates will need sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthesia, suitable for all age groups and sexes at district health service level. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are important, along with the ability to collect and analyse data, apply sound medical ethics, and understand clinical governance. The work requires independence, especially after hours, and the rational use of resources.
Key performance areas include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; and delivering medical services at special events or operations anywhere in the province. Medical officers must respond to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including disasters, and maintain best clinical practice according to quality standards. They are expected to participate in continuing professional development, keep accurate medical records, and contribute to the hospital’s quality improvement programme. Additional duties include conducting clinical audits, ensuring clinical protocols are followed, and supervising or training junior medical officers and registrars where required. While the posts are hospital-based, officers must be prepared to perform any duties allocated by supervisors without boundary restrictions. The remuneration package is all-inclusive and may be supplemented with a rural allowance depending on the location and applicable bargaining council agreements.
