The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a large intake of 227 Medical Officer posts on a shift system, spread across numerous hospitals throughout the province. These positions are structured in three occupational-specific dispensation grades, with posts allocated to a wide range of district and regional hospitals, from major tertiary centres like Pietersburg and Mankweng to smaller facilities such as Evuxakeni and Witpoort. The roles are clinical in nature and are central to supporting the department’s delivery of acute and general medical services, with an emphasis on emergency care, inpatient management, and community outreach. Because these are shift posts, the work involves night duty, weekend and public holiday cover, and the performance of commuted overtime as operational needs require, with approval from the Accounting Officer.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. The grade at which a candidate is appointed depends on years of relevant experience after registration: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for candidates with disabilities, and computer literacy is essential, including MS Office packages and virtual meeting platforms. A skill declaration form must also be submitted as part of the application.
The successful candidates will be expected to provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency medicine, in designated clinical areas, and to perform ward rounds and outreach services across the province. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated timeframes, including during disasters, and maintain best practice in line with HPCSA requirements, including ongoing professional development. Other duties include generating and maintaining accurate medical records, participating in the department’s quality improvement programmes, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring compliance with clinical protocols. More senior incumbents may be required to supervise, instruct, and train junior medical officers and registrars, and to coordinate clinical responsibilities in one or more disciplines. All medical officers must be willing to work without supervision after hours and to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor, without boundary restrictions.
The ideal candidate will have sound clinical knowledge across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health service level. They should demonstrate strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills, as well as the ability to collect and analyse data. A commitment to sound medical ethics, rational use of resources, and an understanding of clinical governance are also key. These posts offer an all-inclusive remuneration package with applicable rural allowances for those in identified nodes, and the department is likely to prioritise employment equity targets. Given the large number of posts, this is a significant recruitment drive for medical professionals seeking stable public-sector employment in Limpopo’s hospital network.
