This large-scale recruitment drive seeks qualified medical practitioners to fill 227 Medical Officer posts on a shift system within the Limpopo Department of Health. The positions are distributed across a wide range of hospitals in the province, from regional and district facilities to smaller rural hospitals, and are available at three professional grades based on post-registration experience. Grade 1 posts are for practitioners with less than five years of appropriate experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years of experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner. All applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the HPCSA and must currently be registered as Independent Medical Practitioners. In addition, candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents.
The role is demanding and requires a willingness to work shifts, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, as well as the ability to perform overtime when operational needs arise. Commuted overtime will be approved by the Accounting Officer based on the flexi/shift system. Successful candidates will be expected to provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas. They will conduct ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events or during disaster management operations. Maintaining high standards of clinical practice is essential, including ongoing professional development through the HPCSA’s Continuing Professional Development system, accurate medical record-keeping, participation in quality improvement programmes, and conducting clinical audits. Medical officers will also be involved in teaching and supervision of junior doctors and registrars where required, and must be prepared to perform any other duties allocated by supervisors across the province without boundary restrictions.
Candidates should possess sound clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics for all age groups and both sexes at district health services level. A thorough understanding of South African medical law, clinical governance, medical ethics, and rational resource use is essential. Good leadership, verbal and written communication, presentation and budgeting skills are also required, along with the ability to collect and analyse data. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms is an inherent requirement, as is a valid driver’s licence, except for applicants with disabilities. A skill declaration form must be attached to the application. The remuneration package is all-inclusive and grade-specific, with an additional rural allowance payable for qualifying candidates, including a higher allowance for facilities located in ISRDS nodes. These posts offer an opportunity to make a significant impact on public healthcare delivery in Limpopo, particularly in underserved rural communities.
