This position offers qualified medical practitioners the opportunity to join the Limpopo Department of Health as a Medical Officer, with a substantial number of vacancies available across a wide network of hospitals in the province. The role is structured into three professional grades, allowing appointments to be made based on the candidate's years of appropriate experience after registration as an independent medical practitioner. As a Medical Officer, the incumbent will be expected to provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency services, within designated hospital settings. The work is demanding but rewarding, set in the district health services environment, and requires a commitment to shift work, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as a willingness to perform overtime as operational needs arise.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Experience requirements vary by grade: less than five years for Grade 1, at least five years for Grade 2, and a minimum of ten years for Grade 3. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. Candidates must also be prepared to work flexi hours and overtime, and must be computer literate, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver's licence is required, except for people with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be attached to the application.
The ideal candidate will possess sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, applicable to all age groups and sexes at district hospital level. A thorough understanding of South African medical law and ethics is essential, along with clinical governance principles. The role demands strong leadership and communication abilities, both verbal and written, as well as presentation and budgeting skills. Successful practitioners will be able to collect and analyse data, use resources rationally, and work independently after hours without supervision.
Key performance areas include providing clinical care in designated areas, performing ward rounds, participating in outreach programmes, and delivering medical services at special events or operations. The Medical Officer must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters or disaster management situations. Maintaining best clinical practice through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA is a core responsibility, as is generating and preserving accurate medical records. The post also involves participating in the department's quality improvement programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring compliance with clinical protocols. Where required, the officer will coordinate clinical responsibilities and supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars in designated disciplines. Any other duties allocated by the supervisor within the province must be undertaken without boundary restrictions.
The remuneration package is all-inclusive and may be supplemented by a rural allowance for posts located in identified ISRDS nodes. Commuted overtime is approved by the Accounting Officer based on operational needs. These are challenging roles suited to dedicated medical professionals who are committed to public healthcare in Limpopo, with posts spread across numerous hospitals in the province, ranging from larger regional facilities to smaller district hospitals.
