MEDICAL OFFICER: [SHIFTS] = [227] POSTS

This position is for a Medical Officer working on a shift system within the Limpopo Department of Health, with a large number of posts available across numerous hospitals in the province. The role is an OSD-graded medical post, with opportunities at Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 levels, depending on the applicant’s years of relevant experience after registration as an independent medical practitioner. The department is recruiting for a substantial number of vacancies, with posts distributed among a wide range of hospitals including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, Kgapane, Mokopane, and many others across both rural and urban settings. Successful candidates will be expected to provide comprehensive medical care within the district health services context, working flexible shifts including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and may be required to perform commuted overtime based on operational needs and approval by the Accounting Officer.

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. For appointment at Grade 1, candidates need less than five years of appropriate and recognisable experience after registration. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, while Grade 3 requires at least ten years of post-registration experience. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents, and they must be willing and able to work shifts and overtime as needed. Computer literacy is essential, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is required, unless the applicant has a disability. A skill declaration form must also be submitted as part of the application process, and the post demands sound knowledge of medical theory and practice, legal aspects of medicine in South Africa, clinical governance, medical ethics, and the ability to work independently after hours without supervision.

The core duties of the Medical Officer include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated areas, performing ward rounds, participating in outreach programmes, and delivering medical services at special events or during disasters. The officer must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times‘ and maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards, including continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA. Other responsibilities include generating and maintaining accurate medical records, participating in the department’s quality improvement programmes, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring compliance with clinical protocols. The role also involves supervising, instructing, and training Medical Officers and Registrars where required, and performing any other duties allocated by the supervisor without boundary restrictions within the province.
