This vacancy offers a substantial number of medical officer posts within the Limpopo Department of Health, specifically for doctors willing to work on a shift system. A total of 227 positions are available across a wide network of hospitals in the province, ranging from larger district facilities to smaller rural institutions. The roles are graded under the Occupational Specific Dispensation for medical practitioners, with posts allocated at Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 levels depending on the candidate’s years of post-registration experience. This is an OSD-graded employment opportunity, and the all-inclusive remuneration package is supplemented by a rural allowance for those placed at designated ISRDS nodes, reflecting the department’s effort to attract medical professionals to underserved areas.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. South African citizenship or permanent residency is a requirement. Experience thresholds determine the grade: Grade 1 posts are for practitioners with less than five years of appropriate experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires at least ten years of post-registration experience. The inherent requirements of the job include a willingness and ability to work shifts and flexible hours, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the capacity to perform overtime when operational needs arise. Commuted overtime is approved by the department’s Accounting Officer based on the flexi-shift system and service demands. Candidates must also be computer literate in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms, and must hold a valid driver’s licence unless they have a disability that prevents this. A skill declaration form must be submitted with the application.

The ideal candidate will possess sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, applicable to all age groups and both sexes at district health services level. A thorough understanding of the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, as well as sound medical ethics and clinical governance principles, is essential. The role also demands strong leadership and communication abilities, both verbal and written, along with presentation and budgeting skills, the capacity to collect and analyse data, and the ability to work independently after hours without supervision. Rational use of resources is a key expectation.

The core duties involve providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, commensurate with the requirements for maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. Medical officers will perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events and operations across the province. They must respond to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters or disaster management situations. Maintaining best clinical practice in line with quality standards is critical, including ongoing professional development through the HPCSA’s Continuing Professional Development system. The role requires generating and maintaining clinical records to minimum required standards, participating in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring compliance with clinical protocols. Medical officers may also be required to coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct, and train junior medical officers and registrars in designated clinical areas or disciplines. Any other duties allocated by a supervisor within the province must be performed without boundary restrictions.

These posts are spread across numerous hospitals, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, and many other facilities, offering successful candidates the opportunity to serve in varied clinical settings. The shift-based nature of the work is central to the role, and applicants must be prepared for after-hours and emergency responsibilities. This is a significant recruitment drive aimed at strengthening medical staffing across Limpopo’s public health facilities.
