The Limpopo Department of Health is recruiting a substantial intake of Medical Officers to work on a shift system, with a total of 227 posts available across dozens of hospitals in the province. These positions are divided into three occupational-specific grades, allowing experienced clinicians to enter at a level appropriate to their years of service. The role is essentially a generalist medical officer post at district hospital level, requiring the capacity to handle a broad spectrum of clinical, surgical and anaesthetic cases across all age groups and both sexes. As the title indicates, the work involves rotating shifts, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, with commuted overtime approved as operational needs dictate, so flexibility and resilience are essential.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. The grade at which a candidate is appointed depends on years of appropriate experience after registration: Grade 1 is for those with fewer than five years, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residentschers. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for people with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be submitted. Computer literacy is also vital, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as virtual meeting platforms.
The knowledge and skills expected include a sound grounding in medical theory and practice, an understanding of South African legal aspects relevant to medicine, and a strong clinical skill base in general medicine, surgery and anaesthesia at district health services level. Good leadership, communication, presentation and budgeting skills are required, along with the ability to collect and analyse data. The department expects adherence to sound medical ethics and clinical governance, rational use of resources, and the confidence to work after hours independently and without supervision.
The key performance areas are wide-ranging. The successful candidate will provide clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, conduct ward rounds and outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events or operations across the province as required. They must respond to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters or disaster management situations. Maintaining best clinical practice in line with quality standards is central, including undergoing Continuous Professional Development as required by the HPCSA. Medical officers must generate and keep accurate clinical records, participate in the department and hospital’s quality improvement programmes, ensure clinical protocols are followed, and conduct clinical audits. They may also be required to take part in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and where necessary to supervise, instruct and train medical officers and registrars in a designated clinical area or discipline. Finally, they must perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor, without boundary restrictions within the province. The remuneration package is all-inclusive and OSD-graded, with an additional rural allowance payable in specified nodes. Given the large number of posts, applicants should note that they can indicate their preferred hospital, with vacancies distributed across urban, semi-urban and rural facilities.
