The Department of Health in Limpopo is advertising a large intake of Medical Officer posts, with 227 vacancies available on a shift system across multiple hospitals in the province. These positions are part of a substantial recruitment drive aimed at strengthening clinical services at district hospital level. Incumbents will work in a variety of designated clinical areas and are expected to provide a full range of medical care, including emergency care, to patients of all age groups and both sexes. The roles are structured across three occupational-specific dispensation grades, with posts allocated to a wide network of hospitals, ranging from larger regional facilities to smaller district and rural hospitals, reflecting the department’s commitment to improving access to medical services throughout Limpopo.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. The experience required depends on the grade applied for: Grade 1 positions require less than five years of appropriate and recognisable experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents. Additionally, candidates must be willing and able to work shifts, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and must be prepared to perform overtime when operational needs arise. The department notes that commuted overtime will be approved by the Accounting Officer based on the flexi or shift system and operational requirements. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for applicants with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be attached as part of the application.

The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, as well as a thorough understanding of the legal aspects relevant to medical practice in South Africa. Strong clinical skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics at district health services level are essential, along with good leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills. The role demands the ability to collect and analyse data, maintain sound medical ethics, apply clinical governance principles, and work after hours independently without supervision. Rational use of resources is also emphasised, as is computer literacy, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms.

Key performance areas include providing clinical care and emergency care in designated areas, performing ward rounds, participating in outreach programmes, and delivering medical services at special events and operations across the province. Medical officers must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters or disaster management situations. They are responsible for maintaining best clinical practice in line with quality standards, including ongoing continuing professional development as required by the HPCSA. The role involves generating and maintaining accurate clinical records, participating in the department’s quality improvement programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring compliance with clinical protocols. Senior post holders may also be required to coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct, and train junior medical officers and registrars in their designated clinical areas or disciplines. In addition, they may be allocated any other duties by their supervisor, without boundary restrictions, within the province. These positions offer a broad and challenging clinical experience, with a clear expectation of dedication to public health service delivery in a hospital setting.
