This is a large-scale recruitment drive for medical officers to fill 227 shift-based posts within the Limpopo Department of Health, with vacancies available across a wide range of hospitals in the province. The positions are graded at three levels, allowing for appointment based on the candidate's years of relevant experience as an independent medical practitioner. This is an OSD-graded position, and the inclusive remuneration package, along with a rural allowance for those serving in identified nodes, reflects the seniority and responsibility of the role. Successful candidates will be expected to work flexi hours, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and to perform commuted overtime as approved by the Accounting Officer based on operational needs.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. For Grade 1, candidates need less than five years of relevant experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. A valid driver's licence is required, except for candidates with disabilities, and computer literacy, including MS Office and virtual meeting platforms, is essential. A skill declaration form must be attached to the application.
The core duties involve providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, performing ward rounds, and delivering medical services at outreach programmes, special events, and during disaster operations. The medical officer will respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards, and keep up to date through Continuous Professional Development as required by the HPCSA. Other responsibilities include generating and maintaining accurate clinical records, participating in the department's Quality Improvement Programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring compliance with clinical protocols. Senior post holders may be required to coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct, and train medical officers and registrars, and perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor without boundary restrictions.
Candidates must demonstrate sound clinical knowledge across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups, along with a strong understanding of the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa. Leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are important, as is the ability to collect and analyse data, uphold sound medical ethics, and apply clinical governance principles. The ability to work independently after hours and to use resources rationally is also expected. These posts offer an opportunity to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo, with a strong focus on service excellence and professional development.
