The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a substantial intake of Medical Officer posts under a shift system, with 227 vacancies spread across grades and distributed among a wide network of district and regional hospitals throughout the province. This is an OSD-graded medical practitioner role, with generous all-inclusive remuneration and, where applicable, an additional rural allowance for posts based at ISRDS nodes. Successful candidates will be appointed to a specific hospital but should expect to work within a provincial framework, as the role requires mobility and a willingness to serve where clinical need arises without boundary restrictions.

Applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered as such. The experience threshold determines the grade: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years of appropriate, recognisable experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents. Inherent to the post is the ability and willingness to work shifts and flexi hours, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, and to perform commuted overtime as approved by the Accounting Officer based on operational needs. Computer literacy in MS Office tools and virtual meeting platforms is required, as is a valid driver’s licence unless the applicant has a disability. A skill declaration form must also be attached to the application.

The knowledge and skills expected go beyond clinical acumen. Practitioners should demonstrate sound medical theory and practice, an understanding of the legal framework governing medicine in South Africa, and solid clinical competence across general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health service level. Strong leadership, verbal and written communication, presentation and budgeting skills are needed, along with the ability to collect and analyse data, uphold medical ethics, apply clinical governance, work after hours independently and use resources rationally.

Key performance areas include providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, across designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; and responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters. Medical officers must maintain best practice standards in line with quality requirements and the HPCSA continuing professional development system. They are responsible for generating and maintaining accurate medical records, participating in the hospital and departmental quality improvement programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring clinical protocols are followed. The post also involves participation in continuing medical education and undergraduate and postgraduate academic activities. Where required, the officer will coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct and train Medical Officers and Registrars in one or more designated clinical disciplines. Any other duties allocated by the supervisor within the province are also part of the role McBride.

These posts offer a significant opportunity for qualified medical practitioners to serve in public health facilities across Limpopo, with clear grading pathways based on experience, structured shift allowances, and the professional challenge of working in both rural and urban hospital settings.
