This is a large-scale recruitment drive for Medical Officers to fill 227 shift-based posts within the Limpopo Department of Health, offering opportunities across a wide network of district and regional hospitals in the province. The vacancies are structured into three professional grades, determined by years of appropriate experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Grade 1 is for practitioners with less than five years of post-registration experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Successful candidates will be placed at one of the many designated hospitals, including major centres such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, Kgapane, and numerous other facilities spread throughout the province, from urban hubs to more remote rural sites. The remuneration is an all-inclusive package aligned with the applicable grade, and an additional rural allowance is payable, either the standard 18 percent of basic salary or 22 percent for those serving in identified ISRDS nodes, reflecting the department’s commitment to attracting doctors to underserved areas.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered in that capacity. South African citizenship or permanent residency is required. A valid driver’s licence is essential, except for candidates with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be submitted. The role demands a willingness to work shifts, flexi hours, night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the ability to perform overtime when operational needs arise. Commuted overtime is approved by the Accounting Officer on a flexi or shift system based on service requirements. Computer literacy is also an inherent requirement, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms.
Candidates must demonstrate sound knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, as well as the legal aspects relevant to practising medicine in South Africa. They need strong clinical skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, covering all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Additional competencies include good leadership and communication skills, both verbal and written, presentation abilities, budgeting skills, data collection and analysis, sound medical ethics, and a thorough understanding of clinical governance. The ability to work after hours independently and without supervision is essential, along with the rational use of resources.
The core duties involve providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, commensurate with the requirements for maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. Medical officers will perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events and operations across the province. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters and disaster management situations. Maintaining best clinical practice in line with quality standards is critical, which includes ongoing professional development through the HPCSA’s Continuing Professional Development system. They are responsible for generating and maintaining accurate clinical records, participating in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring that clinical protocols are followed. The role also involves participating in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Where required, medical officers will coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct, and train junior Medical Officers and Registrars in designated clinical areas or disciplines. Finally, they may be allocated additional duties by their supervisor without boundary restrictions, reflecting the flexible and responsive nature of the post. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified medical practitioners seeking stable public-sector employment with structured career progression and the chance to make a meaningful impact on community health across Limpopo.
