This is a large-scale recruitment drive by the Limpopo Department of Health for Medical Officers to work on a shift system, with a total of 227 posts to be filled across numerous hospitals in the province. The positions are graded according to experience, with Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 levels available, and successful candidates will be placed at specific hospitals as indicated in the advertisement. The role is suited to qualified medical practitioners who are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Independent Medical Practitioners and who are willing to work flexibly, including night duty, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as operational needs require. The post is structured within the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) framework and offers an all-inclusive remuneration package, with a rural allowance applicable to certain posts, including those in ISRDS nodes.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must have current registration. Experience requirements vary by grade: Grade 1 requires less than five years of appropriate experience after registration, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents. Inherent requirements include computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms, as well as a valid driver’s licence, except for people with disabilities. A skill declaration form must be attached to the application. The ideal candidate will have sound clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level, along with a strong understanding of medical law, ethics, clinical governance, and the rational use of resources. Leadership, communication, presentation, budgeting, and data analysis skills are also essential.

The key performance areas are broad and patient-centred. The Medical Officer will provide clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, and will perform ward rounds, outreach programmes, and medical services at special events or operations across the province. The role requires responding to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters, and maintaining best clinical practice in line with quality standards. This includes continuous professional development through the CPD system as required by the HPCSA. The officer must generate and maintain accurate clinical records, participate in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme, conduct clinical audits, and ensure that clinical protocols are followed. Where required, the officer will coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars in designated clinical areas or disciplines. Additional duties may be allocated by the supervisor without boundary restrictions. This is a demanding but rewarding role for medical professionals seeking to serve in public health facilities across Limpopo, with opportunities for career progression through the OSD grading structure.
