This advertisement represents a large-scale recruitment drive for medical officers to be placed across numerous hospitals in the Limpopo province. The roles are structured into three occupational-specific dispensations, often referred to as grades, with each grade determined by the number of years of appropriate experience the candidate holds after registering as an independent medical practitioner with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The positions are shift-based in nature, meaning successful applicants must be willing to work flexi hours, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and to perform overtime when operational needs dictate. Commuted overtime may be approved by the department’s Accounting Officer depending on the flexi or shift system requirements.
Candidates must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as an independent medical practitioner and must currently be registered with the Council in that category. For appointment at the entry grade, applicants need less than five years of relevant experience after registration. Those with at least five years of recognised experience may qualify for the middle grade, while at least ten years of post-registration experience is required for the senior grade. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The post inherently demands computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as familiarity with virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for candidates with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be submitted as part of the application.
The role calls for a broad clinical knowledge base and the ability to apply medical theory and practice safely and legally within the South African healthcare context. Sound clinical skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthesia across all age groups and both sexes are essential, particularly at district health service level. The department expects good leadership and communication abilities, both written and verbal, along with presentation and budgeting skills. Successful candidates will demonstrate sound medical ethics, knowledge of clinical governance, and the capacity to collect and analyse data. They must be able to work after hours independently and without supervision, while also using resources rationally.
Key performance areas include providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, within designated clinical areas in line with the requirements for maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. Medical officers will perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events and provincial operations. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters or disaster management situations. Maintaining best clinical practice according to quality standards is central to the role, which includes continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA. Medical officers are responsible for generating and maintaining clinical records at the minimum required standard, participating in the department and hospital quality improvement programmes, and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures. They will conduct clinical audits, take part in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and ensure that clinical protocols are followed. In addition, they may be required to coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct, and train medical officers and registrars in a designated clinical area or discipline. The post also entails performing any other duties allocated by the supervisor across the province without boundary restrictions.
These positions carry an all-inclusive remuneration package that varies by grade, along with a rural allowance for eligible candidates serving in ISRDS nodes. The vacancies are distributed across a wide range of hospitals, including regional, district, and specialised facilities, so applicants should be prepared for placement in various parts of the province. This is an opportunity for dedicated medical professionals to contribute to public health service delivery in a challenging yet rewarding environment.
