This vacancy is for a substantial intake of Medical Officers, with 227 posts available across multiple hospitals in Limpopo, all operating within a shift-based system. The roles are graded according to experience, offering a clear progression pathway from Grade 1 through to Grade 3, and successful candidates will be placed at one of the many named hospitals spread across the province, from tertiary and regional facilities to district hospitals. These positions are central to the delivery of clinical services within the Department of Health, and the scale of the recruitment drive reflects the department’s commitment to ensuring that hospitals are adequately staffed to provide continuous, quality healthcare.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered as such. The grade at which a candidate enters depends entirely on their years of relevant experience post-registration: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years, Grade 2 requires five to nine years, and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The nature of the posts demands a willingness and ability to work shifts, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as to perform overtime when required. Commuted overtime will be approved based on operational needs under the flexi/shift system. Additionally, computer literacy, including MS Office and virtual meeting platforms, is essential, and a valid driver’s licence is required unless the applicant has a disability. Candidates will also need to attach a skill declaration form.

The ideal Medical Officer will bring sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, suitable for all age groups and both sexes at district health services level. They should understand the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, apply sound medical ethics, and have a firm grasp of clinical governance. Leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are also expected, along with the ability to collect and analyse data. A key part of the role is the capacity to work independently after hours, without supervision, while using resources rationally.

The core duties are broad and patient-centred. Medical Officers will provide clinical care, including emergency care, in the designated clinical areas, commensurate with maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. They will perform ward rounds, conduct outreach programmes, and provide medical services at special events or operations across the province as needed. Responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters, is a critical responsibility. They must maintain best practice through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA, generate and keep clinical records to the required standards, participate in the department’s quality improvement programme, conduct clinical audits, and ensure clinical protocols are followed. Where applicable, they will also supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars in designated areas. The posts carry an all-inclusive remuneration package, with an additional rural allowance payable for posts in identified ISRDS nodes, reflecting the department’s efforts to attract doctors to more remote facilities. These are demanding but rewarding roles for medical professionals looking to make a meaningful impact in public health.
