This is a summary of a Medical Officer Grade 1 to 3 vacancy, with two posts available, based at Delft Community Health Centre (CHC) within the Metro Health Services directorate. The role operates within the primary health care (PHC) system of the Northern/Tygerberg Sub-District, and successful candidates will be expected to deliver comprehensive medical services to a diverse patient population. As a Medical Officer, you will be responsible for providing cost-effective, holistic patient care, which includes managing general medical and surgical conditions at PHC level, as well as attending to forensic and social service cases. The position also carries significant managerial and governance responsibilities, including the effective management and utilisation of physical and financial resources, ensuring clinical governance, and contributing to the training and development of staff. Data management and maintaining a high standard of quality of care, in line with the Code of Conduct, are also core components of the role.
To be considered for this post, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner, and must be registered with the HPCSA. The required experience varies according to the grade being applied for. For Grade 1, South African qualified employees need no experience after registration, while foreign qualified employees who are not required to perform community service in South Africa need at least one year of relevant experience. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years' appropriate experience for South African qualified applicants, or six years for foreign qualified applicants. Grade 3 requires ten years' experience for South African qualified applicants, or eleven years for foreign qualified applicants. In addition, all candidates must possess a valid driver's licence, be willing to travel and perform relief duties when required, and hold valid Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certificates.
The ideal candidate will have experience in managing general medical and surgical conditions at primary health care level, as well as a thorough understanding of South African TB and HIV care guidelines, including drug-resistant TB and HIV in children. Computer literacy in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook is essential, along with strong interpersonal, organisational, and teamwork skills. The role also involves providing outreach services to clinics throughout the Northern/Tygerberg Sub-District, guiding health care colleagues in managing difficult PHC cases. This means the incumbent must be comfortable working across multiple sites and supporting other health professionals in the district.
Notably, candidates who are not yet registered with the HPCSA may also apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who need to change their registration status. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a written or practical assessment as well as an oral assessment. There is no payment of any kind required when applying for this post. For further details, the advertisement lists a contact person and telephone number for enquiries. This is an OSD-graded position, and the remuneration will be in line with the applicable Grade 1, 2, or 3 salary scale based on the successful candidate's experience and qualifications.
