The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a large intake of sessional medical officer posts, with 151 positions available across every hospital in the province. These are graded at Medical Officer Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3, meaning the posts are open to doctors at different stages of their careers, from those who have recently completed their community service to highly experienced practitioners. The sessional nature of the roles means they are remunerated on a per-session basis rather than as full-time salaried employment, but the work itself is extensive and demanding, requiring a genuine commitment to public healthcare. The posts are spread across all hospitals in Limpopo, including rural and regional facilities, so candidates should be prepared to serve in a range of settings and to move between different clinical areas as the need arises.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. The grade at which an applicant is appointed depends entirely on their post-registration experience: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years, Grade 2 is for those with at least five but less than ten years, and Grade 3 is for those with ten or more years of appropriate, recognisable experience. In addition, all applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents and must hold a valid driver’s licence. A skills declaration form must also be submitted with the application. The role also has inherent requirements, including a willingness and ability to work shifts and flexible hours, covering night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as a readiness to work extra hours on short notice and to perform overtime when operational needs demand it. Commuted overtime may be approved but only on the basis of departmental need and the flexi/shift system.

Successful candidates will need a broad range of knowledge and skills. This includes a solid understanding and application of medical theory and practice, as well as the relevant legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa. They must have sound clinical skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, applicable to all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Leadership abilities, verbal and written communication skills, presentation skills, and budgeting skills are also expected, along with computer literacy that extends to data collection and analysis. A thorough understanding of clinical governance, sound medical ethics, and the ability to work independently after hours without supervision are all essential. Furthermore, the department is looking for doctors who demonstrate integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, accountability, and reliability. Successful candidates will be proactive, results-oriented, calm under pressure, adaptable to change, respectful and diplomatic with stakeholders, and willing to work both as a team player and a supportive leader. A commitment to continuous learning and to the Batho Pele principles of public service is also required.

The key performance areas for these sessional medical officers are broad and central to hospital functioning. Medical officers will provide clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, and will perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events and operations throughout the province. They must respond to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters or disaster management situations. They are expected to maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards, to update themselves through the HPCSA’s Continuing Professional Development system, and to generate and maintain clinical records according to the minimum required standards. Participation in the department and hospital quality improvement programmes is mandatory, as is the conduct of clinical audits. Medical officers will also be involved in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They must ensure that clinical protocols are followed in their areas of work and may be required to coordinate clinical responsibilities and to supervise, instruct, and train medical interns, community service medical officers, and registrars. Finally, they must be willing to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor without boundary restrictions, reflecting the wide-ranging and flexible nature of the sessional posts. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified medical practitioners to contribute to public health services across Limpopo while working on a sessional basis at a variety of hospitals.
