The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a large recruitment drive for 151 sessional Medical Officer posts at Grade 1, 2, and 3 levels, based across all hospitals in the province. These are flexible, shift-based appointments designed to support clinical services in district health settings, providing medical care in emergency departments, general wards, outreach programmes, and special operations. Sessional employment means practitioners are engaged on a session-by-session basis according to operational need, with commuted overtime approved by the department’s Accounting Officer on the flexi or shift system. This is an opportunity for qualified medical practitioners to contribute to public healthcare delivery in a variety of hospital environments, with roles available for clinicians at different stages of their careers.
Applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. The grade offered depends on years of appropriate and recognisable experience after registration: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years, Grade 2 for at least five but less than ten years, and Grade 3 for ten years or more. Only South African citizens or permanent residents are eligible. Inherent requirements include a willingness and ability to work shifts, flexi hours, night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the capacity to work extra hours on short notice and perform overtime when needed. A valid driver’s licence is required, along with computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms. Applicants must also submit a skills declaration form as part of the application process.
The role demands sound clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Practitioners need a thorough understanding of medical theory and practice, the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, clinical governance, and sound medical ethics. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, budgeting, and data collection and analysis skills are also essential. The department looks for individuals who can work independently after hours, use resources rationally, and maintain high professional standards.
Key performance areas include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; delivering medical services at special events and operations; responding to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters or disaster management; and maintaining best clinical practice in line with quality standards. Practitioners must keep up to date through the HPCSA’s Continuous Professional Development system, generate and maintain clinical records according to minimum standards, participate in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme, conduct clinical audits, and ensure clinical protocols are followed. They may also be required to supervise, instruct, and train medical interns, medical officers, community service medical officers, and registrars, and to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor without boundary restrictions.
Personal attributes sought include integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, accountability, reliability, a proactive and results-orientated approach, calmness under pressure, adaptability to change, respect and diplomacy with stakeholders, and the ability to work as a team player and supportive leader. A commitment to continuous learning and Batho Pele principles is also important. These sessional posts offer flexible working arrangements for medical officers across Limpopo’s hospitals, with remuneration based on the applicable grade rate per session. Given the scale of the recruitment, this is a significant opportunity for medical professionals seeking sessional work in the public health sector.
