This vacancy is for sessional medical officer posts at Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3, with as many as 151 positions available across all hospitals in the Limpopo provincial health department. These are sessional appointments, meaning medical officers are engaged on a session-by-session basis rather than as full-time permanent employees, and the remuneration is determined according to the applicable grade. The role is central to the delivery of clinical services in district hospitals, and successful candidates will be expected to provide comprehensive medical care across a range of settings, including emergency units, general wards, and outreach programmes.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Experience requirements are linked to the grade applied for: Grade 1 is for practitioners with less than five years of appropriate experience after registration, Grade 2 requires at least five but less than ten years, and Grade 3 requires ten or more years. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. The inherent requirements include a willingness to work shifts, flexi hours, night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the ability to work extra hours on short notice and perform overtime when needed. Commuted overtime may be approved based on operational needs. A valid driver's licence is required, and applicants must be computer literate in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, including proficiency with virtual meeting platforms. A skills declaration form must be attached to the application.
Candidates should possess sound knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, including the legal aspects of medicine in South Africa. They need strong clinical skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are also expected, along with the ability to collect and analyse data. The department looks for professionals who demonstrate integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, accountability, reliability, a proactive and results-oriented approach, calmness under pressure, adaptability, respect, diplomacy, and a commitment to continuous learning and Batho Pele principles.
The key performance areas include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters; maintaining best clinical practice through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA; and generating and maintaining clinical records to the required standards. Medical officers will participate in the department's Quality Improvement Programme, conduct clinical audits, and ensure that clinical protocols are followed. They may also be required to coordinate clinical responsibilities and supervise, instruct, and train medical interns, community service medical officers, and registrars. Finally, they must be prepared to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor in the province without boundary restrictions. These sessional posts offer an opportunity for qualified medical practitioners to contribute to public healthcare delivery across Limpopo's hospitals while earning grade-appropriate sessional rates.
