This is a sessional medical officer opportunity within the Limpopo provincial health department, with 151 posts available across all public hospitals in the province. The role is open to qualified medical practitioners who are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as independent practitioners, and grading is based on years of appropriate experience after registration. Grade 1 is for less than five years, Grade 2 for five to less than ten years, and Grade 3 for ten years or more. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents and hold a valid driver’s licence. The sessional nature means work is shift-based, including night duty, weekends, public holidays, and being available on short notice; commuted overtime may be approved by the accounting officer depending on operational needs.
The successful candidate will provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, conduct ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and support special events or disaster response. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated timeframes, maintain clinical records to required standards, and follow clinical protocols. The role also requires active participation in the department’s quality improvement programme, conducting clinical audits, and engaging in continuing professional development as required by the HPCSA. In addition, the medical officer may be required to supervise, instruct, and train medical interns, community service medical officers, and registrars, and to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor without boundary restrictions.
Candidates need sound clinical knowledge across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level, as well as knowledge of South African medical law, clinical governance, and medical ethics. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, budgeting, and computer skills are essential, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, virtual meeting platforms, and data collection and analysis. Personal attributes such as integrity, professionalism, accountability, reliability, attention to detail, calmness under pressure, adaptability, respect for stakeholders, teamwork, and a commitment to Batho Pele principles are expected. A skills declaration form must be attached, and applicants should be willing to work independently after hours and under pressure. This is a broad and demanding role suited to medical professionals committed to quality public healthcare in Limpopo.
