This is a sessional medical officer post, offering 151 positions across all hospitals in the Limpopo provincial health department. The role is structured at three grades, allowing entry-level, mid-career and senior medical officers to apply, depending on their years of post-registration experience. As a sessional employee, the incumbent will be engaged on a flexible, shift-based schedule that responds to the operational needs of the hospital, including night duty, weekends and public holidays. This is a clinical post that requires independent practice and a commitment to public sector healthcare standards.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Grade 1 requires less than five years of appropriate experience after registration; Grade 2 requires at least five but less than ten years; and Grade 3 requires ten or more years. South African citizenship or permanent residency is mandatory, as is a valid driver's licence. Computer literacy in MS Office tools and virtual meeting platforms is also required, along with the willingness to work after hours, under pressure, and to perform overtime on short notice. A skills declaration form must be attached to the application.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, including the legal aspects of medicine in South Africa. Clinical competence in general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics across all age groups and sexes at district health services level is essential. The role demands strong leadership, communication, presentation and budgeting skills, as well as the ability to collect and analyse data. Personal attributes such as integrity, professionalism, accountability, reliability, and a calm, adaptable approach under pressure are important. The department values team players who are respectful, diplomatic, and committed to continuous learning and Batho Pele principles.

Key responsibilities include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; responding to emergency calls and disaster situations; and maintaining best clinical practice in line with quality standards. The medical officer will generate and maintain clinical records, participate in the hospital's quality improvement programme, conduct clinical audits, and engage in continuing medical education and academic activities. Supervision and training of medical interns, community service officers, registrars and other staff form an important part of the role, as does ensuring adherence to clinical protocols. Additional duties may be allocated by the supervisor without boundary restrictions.

This is a demanding but rewarding position for medical professionals seeking to contribute to public healthcare in Limpopo. The sessional nature of the post means that remuneration is based on sessional rates, which vary according to the grade at which the incumbent is appointed. Commuted overtime may be approved by the Accounting Officer based on operational needs and the flexi/shift system. Applicants should note that all positions are based at hospitals across the province, and applications must be directed to the specific hospital of interest as listed in the advertisement. The role offers an opportunity to work in a variety of clinical settings and to make a meaningful difference in underserved communities.
