This position is for a Medical Officer in Internal Medicine at General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital, a regional facility within the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health. The role is graded according to the Occupational Specific Dispensation for medical officers, with three possible grades depending on experience, and includes a fixed commuted overtime component as well as an inhospitable allowance. The successful candidate will join the Internal Medicine unit under the Head of Clinical Unit and will be expected to function effectively in a busy, challenging hospital environment serving a diverse community.
Applicants must hold a tertiary qualification in medicine (MBChB or equivalent) and be currently registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Practitioner. For appointment at Grade 1, no post-registration experience is required beyond registration. Grade 2 requires at least five years of post-registration experience as a Medical Practitioner, while Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. In addition, a valid ACLS certification is mandatory. The ideal candidate will have sound medical knowledge in internal medicine, with the ability to manage chronic, subacute, and acute conditions. They must be familiar with medical protocols, health policies, acts, and regulations, and be able to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team. Practical skills in performing procedures and resuscitating patients are essential, as are excellent communication skills and the ability to build meaningful relationships with patients from diverse backgrounds. The role demands resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to making a difference in a challenging environment.
The core duties involve providing clinical care as per hospital and departmental requirements, including compulsory commuted overtime that will be scheduled according to institutional needs. The Medical Officer will also support the Head of Department in quality assurance activities, including quality improvement projects, morbidity and mortality reviews, monthly audits, and the development of clinical guidelines and policies. Patient satisfaction is a key focus, with responsibilities including conducting patient satisfaction surveys, reducing waiting times, and identifying and exceeding patient expectations. The role also entails conducting research, maintaining high professional and ethical standards, and actively participating in academic activities. Overtime duties are an integral part of the job and will be performed in line with hospital needs.
This is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity (ethical conduct) assessment. These assessments will be scored as part of the interview process. Appointment is subject to security checks by the State Security Agency, including criminal clearance, credit records, and citizenship verification, as well as verification of qualifications by SAQA and previous employment experience. Applicants must submit a completed Z83 employment form and a detailed curriculum vitae, with the reference number indicated on the Z83. Certified copies of qualifications and other documents will only be requested from shortlisted candidates before the interview. Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and if no notification is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their applications unsuccessful. No transport or subsistence payments will be made for interview attendance.
