This position offers a rewarding opportunity for qualified medical practitioners to join the anaesthetics department at General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital, a key public healthcare facility serving the KwaZulu-Natal region. The role is available at three different grades, allowing candidates with varying levels of experience to apply. As a Medical Officer in Anaesthetics, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive anaesthetic care across a wide range of clinical settings, including both the operating theatre and the intensive care unit. The post requires a commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care in a busy regional hospital environment, working closely with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, physicians, obstetricians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. You will be expected to handle diverse anaesthetic cases, including high-care and ICU patients, and to apply your knowledge of medical, surgical, and obstetrical protocols to ensure safe and effective anaesthesia management.
To be considered for the post, applicants must hold a tertiary qualification in medicine, specifically an MBCHB or equivalent, and must be currently registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Practitioner. For Grade 1, no additional post-registration experience is required, making this an ideal entry point for recently qualified doctors. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years of post-registration experience as a Medical Practitioner, while Grade 3 demands at least ten years of such experience. Beyond the basic qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess demonstrable experience and ability in managing a wide variety of anaesthetic cases, particularly those involving high care and intensive care settings. A working knowledge of relevant health policies, acts, and regulations, as well as medical, surgical, and obstetrical protocols, is essential. Strong communication skills, the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, and the capacity to build meaningful relationships with a diverse patient community are also key. The role demands resilience and adaptability in a fast-paced environment, along with a positive attitude that contributes to the smooth functioning of a busy department. Holding a Diploma in Anaesthetics, or having significant exposure to the specialty, will be considered an added advantage.
The core duties of this position are extensive and clinically focused. You will be required to perform clinical duties as per hospital and departmental requirements, which includes compulsory commuted overtime in both the ICU and the operating theatre. This means you must be prepared to work flexible hours to meet the institution’s needs. Beyond direct patient care, you will assist the Head of Department in quality assurance initiatives, participate in quality improvement projects, and contribute to morbidity and mortality reviews. You will also be involved in conducting various monthly audits, developing clinical guidelines and policies, and ensuring that patient satisfaction is prioritised through surveys and efforts to reduce waiting times. The role also encourages participation in research activities to advance clinical knowledge and practice. Maintaining and continuously improving professional and ethical standards is a fundamental expectation, and you will be expected to uphold the values of the department at all times.
This is an OSD-graded position, meaning the salary package is structured according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation, and it includes an all-inclusive package with a fixed commuted overtime component and an additional inhospitable allowance. The hospital is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Please note that the selection process includes pre-entry assessments for shortlisted candidates, covering both technical suitability and ethical conduct. The appointment is subject to security checks, verification of qualifications, and confirmation of previous experience. Applicants are reminded to submit the required application form and a detailed CV, and to ensure that the reference number is correctly indicated. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and if you do not receive any notification within three months of the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful. This is a demanding but highly rewarding role for a dedicated medical professional looking to make a significant impact in anaesthetic care within a regional hospital setting.
