MEDICAL BIOLOGICAL SCIENTIST: REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY / CLINICAL EMBRYOLOGY

This position offers an opportunity for a qualified Medical Biological Scientist specialising in Reproductive Biology and Clinical Embryology to join the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. The successful candidate will be part of a newly established multidisciplinary infertility and assisted reproductive technology service, working alongside reproductive medicine specialists, obstetricians, gynaecologists, nurses and laboratory personnel to support couples and individuals undergoing fertility assessment and treatment. The post reports to the Head of the Reproductive Medicine Unit and is graded according to the Occupational Specific Dispensation, with entry-level, experienced and senior grades available depending on years of relevant post-registration experience.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Biological Scientist in Reproductive Biology or Clinical Embryology, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in the relevant category. At least one year of experience in a reproductive medicine unit is required. For Grade 1, South African qualified employees need no experience after registration, while foreign qualified employees who are not required to perform community service need one year of relevant experience. Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years for South African qualified employees and eleven years for foreign qualified employees, and Grade 3 requires twenty and twenty-one years respectively.

The core duties revolve around scientific excellence and technical competence in ART laboratory techniques, including meticulous handling, identification and documentation of reproductive material. The incumbent must demonstrate strong knowledge of reproductive biology and contemporary embryology, maintain high technical standards, and uphold the ethical and professional responsibilities associated with working with human gametes and embryos. The role also involves teaching and mentorship to develop future reproductive health professionals, as well as a commitment to research, audit and evidence-based practice to advance infertility care.
