This re-advertised vacancy for a Mechanical Engineer in Engineering Services is based at the Limpopo Department of Health’s Provincial Office in Polokwane. The role is an occupational-specific graded position spanning Grade A to Grade C, with the final salary notch determined by the candidate’s years of experience after professional registration. The successful incumbent will be responsible for performing and managing a wide range of innovative and complex engineering activities that advance technology and engineering applications within the provincial health infrastructure portfolio. This is a senior technical role that requires the ability to work within the Provincial Infrastructure Delivery Framework (IDMS), to guide operations according to applicable legislation, policies, frameworks and instruction notes, and to contribute meaningfully to the development of infrastructure strategies, systems, projects, and functional norms and standards.

To qualify, applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate or Grade 12 or Matric, coupled with an appropriate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and must be registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). At least three years of post-qualification experience is required. The ideal candidate must be fully computer literate, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is essential, except for candidates with disabilities, and the successful applicant must be prepared to travel extensively throughout the province and to work longer hours when required. A thorough understanding of the health service delivery platform, its indicators and service plans, and how these link with infrastructure, is critical. The role also demands knowledge of how acquisitions and disposals are managed in government, the ability to conduct risk analyses and develop mitigation strategies, and a firm grasp of provincial and departmental policies on leases and property management. Familiarity with infrastructure information fields needed to update health infrastructure information management systems is also expected.

Key duties include undertaking engineering designs and performing the final review and approval of audits on new designs according to sound engineering principles and theory. The engineer will implement the maintenance strategy, set maintenance standards, specifications and service levels to ensure optimum operational availability, and monitor maintenance efficiencies against organisational goals. The position also entails providing effective engineering and project management services, loading project documents and updating data management systems, undertaking research, and managing human, physical and financial resources. Strong abilities in preparing documentation, report writing, chairing site meetings, taking minutes, and meeting strict project deadlines are essential. Budget preparation and the ability to extract and interpret information from related information systems are also important.

Prospective applicants should note that the new Z83 application form must be fully completed and signed, with a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae attached as a PDF for online applications. The CV serves as an extension of the application form, and all relevant fields must be completed to avoid disqualification. This is a demanding professional role suited to a candidate who can operate independently within a complex public-sector infrastructure environment while driving quality and compliance across all mechanical engineering outputs.
