This position is for a Maintenance Vehicle Operator within the Department of Water and Sanitation, based in Worcester under the Provincial Operations directorate of the Western Cape. The role sits within the Water and Sanitation Services Management branch and focuses on supporting the maintenance of hydrological infrastructure across the region. As a Maintenance Vehicle Operator, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of both light and heavy motor vehicles, as well as construction machinery, while carrying out essential maintenance work at dams, waterways and related water infrastructure sites. This is a hands-on operational role that requires a strong understanding of transport procedures, vehicle safety and government logistics practices.

To be considered for this post, applicants must hold an NQF level 4 qualification, which is equivalent to a Senior Certificate or Grade 12. A valid, unexpired driver’s licence is essential, specifically Code EC1 or another relevant licence class, and you must also possess a Professional Driving Permit (PDP). In addition, a certified competency or operating certificate for the relevant heavy plant or machinery is required. The department expects at least five years of practical experience in driving heavy motor vehicles and operating heavy equipment. Knowledge of driving and operating services, organisational policies, process flows, technical services, government structures and regulations is also required. Familiarity with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), delegation authority, financial management and analytical procedures will be advantageous. The role demands strong client orientation, communication skills, accountability, ethical conduct and, notably, knowledge of library science as part of the broader administrative requirements.

The main duties include operating light and heavy motor vehicles and construction machinery during maintenance activities at hydrological infrastructure. You will be expected to keep accurate logbooks, implement best practices in driving services, analyse logistics operations, and handle the delivery and collection of passengers, packages, documents, small-volume supplies and construction materials. Maintaining registers for deliveries and pickups is a key administrative task. You will also perform general maintenance on vehicles, check monthly service records, formulate procedures for issuing vehicles, and ensure compliance with applicable transport policy requirements. Routine inspections for visible defects, recording fuel and fluid levels, and the safe storage of vehicles and machinery are all part of the daily responsibilities. You must ensure vehicles are kept secure, that parking areas are free of hazards, and that vehicles are parked and issued in line with government legislation.

This is an equal opportunity employment position, and the Department of Water and Sanitation encourages women and persons with disabilities to apply, with preference given to Employment Equity targets. Shortlisted candidates will be subject to suitability checks, including qualification verification, reference checks, and criminal and credit checks. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate if shortlisted, and foreign nationals or dual citizens must provide a police clearance from their country of origin. Applications must be submitted online, and no supporting documents are required at the initial application stage; shortlisted candidates will produce these at interview. Failure to complete all required fields on the online Z83 form, particularly professional registration details, will result in disqualification. Late, faxed or incomplete applications will not be considered. If you do not receive a response within three months of the closing date, please consider your application unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to fill this position.
