The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is seeking a qualified and experienced Librarian to join its Strategy, Operations and Compliance division, specifically within the Information and Systems Management unit, based at the Head Office in Pretoria. This role is central to ensuring that legal professionals within the NPA have timely access to accurate legal information, both in print and digital formats. The position is graded at Level 07 and offers a stable career within a key public service institution.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the full spectrum of library services. This includes cataloguing and classifying library materials using available databases, maintaining the asset register for all library resources including disposals, and renewing standing orders to ensure continuity of subscriptions. The librarian will also manage inter- and intra-library loans, conduct periodic stock takes, and keep detailed statistics on library usage and collections. Procurement and processing of new materials for both head office and regional offices form a significant part of the role, as does loose-leaf administration to keep legal publications current. The librarian will liaise with external clients, assist with information projects of the NPA, and process requests for law reports, statutes, and reference materials. Training clients in the use of online databases is another key responsibility, along with submitting monthly reports to management.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Bachelor's degree at NQF level 7 or a three-year diploma at NQF level 6. At least two years of relevant experience are required, preferably within a law library environment. Demonstrable competency in acting independently, professionally, accountably, and with credibility is essential. Candidates must be able to work on an electronic library management system, including e-books, and be computer literate in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. A minimum of two years' experience using legal research platforms such as Jutastat, LexisNexis, Sabinet, and WorldShare is also required. A willingness to travel is necessary.
The NPA has a strict application and vetting process. Applicants must submit a completed Z83 form and a comprehensive CV, and only shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide certified copies of qualifications and other documents. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. Successful candidates will be subjected to a security clearance at least at confidential level, and appointment will be provisional pending that clearance. Fingerprints will be taken on the day of the interview, and the social media accounts of shortlisted applicants may be accessed as part of verification. All shortlisted candidates will undertake a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. A valid driver's licence is required where applicable. The NPA does not pay resettlement costs, and applicants who do not receive feedback within six months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. This is an opportunity to contribute to the effective functioning of the NPA's information services while working in a professional and dynamic environment.
