    Duties

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The purpose of this position is to contribute to teaching, research, and community engagement in the field of Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE), with a specific focus on English First Additional Language (FAL) education within the BEd Foundation Phase programme. The role is centred on preparing and supporting pre-service teachers through high-quality teaching and learning that develops both strong theoretical foundations and practical pedagogical competencies for language and literacy education in diverse South African classrooms. This includes facilitating teaching and learning in contact mode at the NWU Mahikeng Campus.The position carries a strong research mandate aimed at advancing scholarship, evidence-based practice, and innovation in English FAL education and early literacy development within the ECDE field. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to research outputs, postgraduate supervision, and scholarly engagement that strengthen the preparation of Foundation Phase teachers and address contemporary challenges in language and literacy education.In addition, the role includes the supervision and mentorship of honours and postgraduate students, supporting the integration of theory and practice in both academic and practical contexts. The incumbent will also be expected to engage actively in community outreach and partnerships that strengthen collaboration between the university, schools, and broader communities, while promoting inclusive, equitable, and sustainable language and literacy education opportunities for young learners.  KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. TeachingTeaching undergraduate English FAL courses in the subject group in contact mode at the Mahikeng Campus.             2. Programme developmentContributing to the development, review, and contextualisation of modules and study materials, aligned with national priorities and inclusive pedagogies. 3. Research and supervisionResearch, postgraduate supervision, and appropriate publications in the field of ECDE, preferably with English FAL as the focus. For lecturer level, furthering of the incumbents’ own qualification on a doctoral level in English HL/FAL in Early Childhood Development (ECD). 4. WIL/SupervisionSupporting WIL through mentoring, supervision, and reflective practice in ECD settings. Facilitating school-based learning and integration of theory into practice.5. CEEngage in community outreach and partnerships that strengthen collaboration between the university, schools, and broader communities, while promoting inclusive, equitable, and sustainable language and literacy education opportunities for young learners.6. AdministrationPerforming administrative duties, including use of the NWU Learning Management System and participation in departmental processes and quality assurance activities.
