    Organization: Science and Technology Education - Wits School of Education

    The Wits School of Education seeks to appoint a suitably qualified candidate at the Lecturer level to contribute to its Initial Teacher Education and postgraduate programmes, which serve a racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse student population. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise postgraduate research, conduct and publish research, and contribute to the advancement of equitable and transformative educational practices that respond to the needs of linguistically and economically diverse communities. The lecturer will be responsible for teaching foundational and advanced concepts in Science Education, with particular expertise in both Physics and Chemistry. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to advancing equity, social justice, and inclusive practices in STEM education. An interdisciplinary orientation is essential, with a focus on promoting equitable access, participation, and success in Science Education for all learners. The candidate should also have a research profile aligned with integrated Physical Sciences teaching and learning and be capable of contributing to innovative scholarship in STEM education. Research expertise may draw on a range of theoretical and methodological approaches, including justice-oriented frameworks and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on addressing educational inequalities and enhancing teaching and learning in diverse contexts.
    Qualifications and Experience: 
    The successful candidate must meet the following criteria to be appointed: 
    ? A completed doctorate (PhD) in Science Education or cognate B.Sc. disciplines, with disciplinary expertise spanning both Physics and Chemistry.
    ? A demonstrated interest in advancing research on the social, cultural, and structural factors that influence access to and participation in Physical Sciences, grounded in equity, social justice, and transformative theoretical frameworks.
    ? A strong understanding of the intersections between Science Education and digital pedagogies, together with the ability to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Natural Sciences, Physics, and Chemistry Education.
    ? Experience in the design, implementation, and evaluation of laboratory-based learning activities, including the coordination of practical Science and Technology laboratory sessions. Experience conducting research on culturally sustaining and responsive pedagogies that promote equitable STEM learning will be an advantage.
    ? A strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision, and research, coupled with the ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with diverse student and stakeholder communities.
    ? Excellent digital literacy skills, including demonstrable experience in integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools into teaching and learning through the use of simulations, video-based technologies, and other innovative digital platforms. 
    ? The ability to design and develop high-quality digital learning resources is essential.
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    ? Design, prepare, and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Physical Science Education, employing current and emerging evidence-based practices that enhance student learning and success.
    ? Develop and sustain a productive research agenda, publish in accredited peer-reviewed scholarly journals, and secure external research funding to support research projects and postgraduate student development.
    ? Conduct and contribute to research, scholarship, and engagement activities that inform system-level analyses, practices, and policies aimed at advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice in STEM education.
    ? Contribute actively to the school?s strategic priorities and values, including teaching excellence, inclusivity, digital innovation, research impact, student success, and community engagement.
    ? Demonstrate the ability and willingness to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams, contribute to collegial governance and service activities, and undertake other duties as reasonably assigned by the school.
