The Durban University of Technology (DUT), a leading multi-campus university of technology situated in Durban and Pietermaritzburg along South Africa's east coast, is seeking a Lecturer in Photography to join the Department of Visual Communication Design within the Faculty of Arts and Design. This is a permanent academic appointment at associate level, open to external candidates, and forms part of DUT's commitment to producing adaptive graduates who transform society, in line with the institution's ENVISION2030 strategy and its emphasis on people-centred engagement, innovation and entrepreneurship. The successful candidate will join a university recognised nationally and internationally for its teaching, research and creative output, and will contribute directly to the Photography Programme at both undergraduate and honours level.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Photography or an appropriate associated field, although a PhD in Photography or a related discipline will be given strong preference. The role requires a minimum of three years' teaching experience at tertiary level, or alternatively three years' experience in the photography industry. Comprehensive photographic studio experience is a pre-requisite, and candidates should be comfortable working with both analogue and digital photography. The ideal applicant will be able to create contemporary, innovative curriculum content at degree and honours level, and will have experience with new platforms aligned with the Fourth Industrial Revolution. A working knowledge of post-production software such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop is essential, as is familiarity with DSLR video and multimedia production using Adobe Premier Pro. Experience in teaching and learning technologies, including e-learning, would be an advantage, as would experience in teaching English to second-language students. Candidates must also provide a portfolio of photographic work, teaching materials and assessments as evidence of their practice.

The duties of the role are wide-ranging and academically demanding. The successful candidate will lecture in the Photography Programme at degree and honours level, with a specific focus on studio photography, and will be responsible for setting and marking tests, assignments and portfolios. They will develop new content and curriculum for the relevant qualifications, create materials specifically for online learners, and engage in departmental administration duties. Participation in individual and programme-level research projects is expected, along with attendance at meetings prescribed by the Head of Department. The appointee will also take part in the wider academic life of DUT, serving on at least one committee and undertaking any appropriate duties assigned by the Programme Co-ordinator or Head of Department. Importantly, the candidate must be committed to conducting research and publishing research outputs or producing creative research outputs. If not already in possession of a PhD, the successful applicant must register for doctoral study within three years of appointment.
