    Organization: Music - Wits School of Arts

    Wits Music is housed in a multidisciplinary School of Arts offering programmes in Cultural Policy and Management, Curatorial, Public and Visual Cultures, Digital Arts, Drama for Life (Applied Theatre and Drama Therapies), Film and Television, Fine Arts, Interdisciplinary Arts & Culture Studies, Music, and Theatre and Performance.     The School is seeking to make an appointment from 1 January 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter, in the following area, and we strongly encourage applicants from the designated groups.
     
    The incumbent?s primary areas of research and teaching experience should be in jazz history, although ideally their experience and interests will be broad enough to encompass other areas. The member should demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of South African and pan-African jazz.
    Qualifications and Experience: 
    A PhD, with a track record of university teaching preferred. Evidence of research potential, with at least two publications in the past two to three years if appointed from another university.
    Duties: 
    Teach undergraduate courses in jazz history, as well as in other areas such as popular music; and supervise graduate students. In addition, the incumbent may be expected to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching in the School. Their teaching and research should be focused on Africa. They will be expected to play a role in the administration of the Music Department and the School.
