The Durban University of Technology’s Department of Information Technology, situated within the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, is seeking to fill two permanent Lecturer positions. This is an entry-level academic role ideal for a passionate educator who can explain programming and software engineering concepts clearly while inspiring students across a range of theory-based and practical IT modules. The successful candidate will join a dynamic department that hosts the Luban Workshop, a collaborative initiative with Tianjin Vocational Institute of China, featuring specialist laboratories for 3D printing and Narrowband Internet of Things. This unique environment offers an exciting opportunity to teach in cutting-edge facilities and contribute to innovative, hands-on learning.
Applicants must hold a Master’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical/Electronic Engineering, although a PhD in a related field will be given strong preference. At least three years of lecturing experience in higher education is required. Desirable qualifications include demonstrated experience with programming languages and platforms such as C#, Java, MySQL, Python, PHP, and AWS or Azure, as well as the ability to mentor both individual students and groups as they develop software solutions for mobile applications, web, virtual, cloud, or network-based environments. Candidates who have completed a PhD or are at an advanced stage of their doctoral studies are particularly encouraged to apply. The role also calls for evidence of scholarship in teaching and active participation in professional, industry, or community activities.
The core duties involve lecturing in both face-to-face and online formats, developing and marking assessments, and maintaining high standards of feedback and evaluation. The lecturer will be expected to pursue ongoing research and publication, innovate in teaching practice, support, and assessment, and work closely with colleagues to advise and support students. Participation in departmental engagement and collaborative projects is also required, along with undertaking administrative tasks assigned by the Head of Department. Strong competencies in programming, communication, interpersonal skills, organisation, planning, research, teamwork, analytical thinking, problem solving, and a clear student focus are essential for success.
This position is based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, and offers a market-related salary. While the university strives for equal opportunities, preference will be given to suitable candidates in line with its equity policy. The university reserves the right not to make an appointment. Interested applicants should note that only those who submit a fully completed prescribed application form, along with a detailed curriculum vitae, covering letter, certified copies of qualifications and academic records, and contactable referees, will be considered. Communication will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and no manual applications will be accepted. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated academic to grow within a forward-thinking department and contribute to the development of future IT professionals.
