An exciting opportunity exists within the Western Cape Department of Agriculture for a Lecturer in Horticulture and Pomology at the Elsenburg campus. This role is central to the department's educational mandate, equipping students and practitioners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for successful fruit production in the region. The incumbent will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in horticulture, with a specific focus on pome fruit, stone fruit, and citrus fruit production. As a lecturer, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of the agricultural workforce and support the broader goals of the department in promoting sustainable and competitive farming practices.

To be considered, applicants must possess an appropriate four-year BSc degree, or equivalent or higher qualification, with Horticulture as a major. This academic background must be complemented by at least three years of relevant experience in the horticulture field. A valid driving licence, Code B or higher, is also required, reflecting the need for mobility in carrying out departmental duties. The ideal candidate will demonstrate proven knowledge of pome fruit, stone fruit, and citrus fruit production systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with computer literacy and the ability to use technology in teaching and administration. Leadership abilities, sound planning and organisational skills, and experience in formal training and presentation are also key competencies for this position.

In this role, the lecturer will prepare lesson plans and present practical, theoretical, and/or short courses to a diverse range of learners. This includes the renewal and development of course material and study guides to ensure content remains current and relevant. The lecturer will be responsible for the assessment of students, including marking, feedback, and record-keeping. Administrative responsibilities form an important part of the job, requiring efficient management of class records, schedules, and departmental procedures. Furthermore, the incumbent is expected to stay abreast of applicable prescripts, policies, procedures, technologies, and new developments in the subject field, ensuring that teaching practices align with the latest industry standards and government regulations.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews at a date and time determined by the department. They must also submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within the timeframe communicated prior to the interview. Failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in disqualification from the process. All shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine suitability based on the post's technical and generic requirements, and an integrity, or ethical conduct, assessment. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for employment references, including enquiries relating to disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for a dedicated horticulture professional who is passionate about education and the future of the fruit industry.
