This vacancy is for a Lecturer in Nephrology Nursing Science at the KwaZulu Natal College of Nursing, Grey’s Campus, based at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. This is a re-advertised post within the provincial Department of Health, and it is open to applicants at either Grade 1 or Grade 2 level, depending on their years of relevant experience. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality nursing education, with a particular focus on the Post Graduate Diploma in Nephrology Nursing. The role combines campus-based teaching with the coordination of clinical learning exposure for student nurses, ensuring that theoretical instruction is effectively linked to practical experience in clinical settings. The post is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation for nursing educators, with remuneration and benefits aligned to the applicable public service provisions.
Candidates must hold a Senior Certificate or Grade 12, together with a Diploma or Degree in General Nursing, Community, Psychiatric and Midwifery that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, applicants need a post-registration qualification in Nursing Education and a Post Basic Qualification in Nephrology Nursing Science, both registered with SANC, as well as current SANC registration for 2026. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate and recognisable experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing is required. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in Nursing Education after obtaining the one-year post-basic qualification. An unendorsed valid Code EB driver’s licence and a Master’s degree in Nursing are also required. Only shortlisted candidates will need to submit proof of qualifications and service certificates endorsed by Human Resources.
The ideal candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of the legislative and regulatory framework governing public service and nursing education, including the Health Act, Higher Education Act, SAQA Act, NQF, Nursing Act, Council on Higher Education policies, college policies, Public Service Regulations, Disciplinary Code and Procedure, and the Labour Relations Act. A sound understanding of the nursing code of ethics, professional practice, standards of practice and scope of practice is essential. The role demands expertise in curriculum development and review, particularly for the Nephrology Nursing programme, as well as proficiency in teaching, assessment and evaluation approaches for the Post Graduate Diploma. Strong skills in planning, scheduling and implementing training programmes, conflict resolution, decision-making, problem-solving, research, analysis, communication, presentation, and computer literacy, including MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, are all required. The ability to work within set deadlines and maintain good interpersonal relations is also important.
Key duties include providing education and training to student nurses, coordinating their clinical learning exposure between the campus and clinical areas, and supporting the mission and image of the college. The lecturer will implement assessment strategies to determine student nurses’ competencies, exercise control over students, and participate in quality assurance programmes. The post also involves policy analysis, development and implementation, as well as the development and review of nursing curricula for Nephrology Nursing. The incumbent will implement new nursing programmes in line with SANC and Council on Higher Education regulations, participate in continuous professional development activities at the campus, and take part in all government structures of the college.
This post has an employment equity target of African Male, Coloured Male, White Male and White Female candidates, reflecting the department’s commitment to affirmative action and representivity. The department is an equal opportunity employer. Applicants must complete the new Z83 application form and submit a detailed curriculum vitae; shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, namely a practical exercise and an integrity, or ethical conduct, assessment. As this is a re-advertisement, interested candidates should take note of the closing date and ensure their applications are submitted in accordance with the instructions in the advertisement.
