    Organization: Digital Arts - Wits School of Arts

    Digital Arts Theory is an interdisciplinary academic framework that explores how new media, and digital technologies shape contemporary art, visual culture, creative practice and society. It bridges the gap between traditional aesthetics and modern technology by analysing mediums like interactive art, video games, Interactive Media, and Animation. 

    We seek a Digital Art Theory lecturer. 
    The Wits School of Arts (WSOA) invites applications for a permanent appointment at the level of Lecturer in the Digital Arts Division. The successful candidate will join a dynamic interdisciplinary environment comprising other departments in the WITS School of Arts namely:  Fine Arts, Curatorial Practice and Visual Cultures, Theatre and Performance, Music, Film and Television, Digital Arts, Drama for Life, and Cultural Policy and Management.
     
    Minimum Requirements
    ? A PhD in Digital Arts or PhD in Digital Culture Studies, related fields.
    ? Focuses on the critical intersection of media, contemporary culture, and creative practice
    ? Demonstrated teaching excellence and experience in Digital Arts Theory and Critical approaches to audiovisual analysis or Digital Iconology.
    ? On-going postgraduate supervision experience such as (Honours, Master?s).
    ? Evidence of academic experience teaching Digital Arts Theoretical courses, Audiovisual analysis, visual culture courses, Art in the post-truth era
    ? Deep theoretical understanding of digital aesthetics, algorithmic cultures, post-digital theory, Art in the post-truth era and the African digital arts landscape.
    ? Knowledge of Digital Arts as cultural, gender, political, aesthetic, and industrial texts.
    ? Familiarity with debates around race, gender, identity, coloniality, Iconology and digital iconology, Semiotics, auteur theory, politics of South African design, representation in digital arts (including games, animation VR etc.)
    ? Evidence of a research output within the digital Arts space (Animation, Afrosurrealism or Interactive media or Game design) (Book chapter or DHET Recognized Output).
    Key Responsibilities
    The successful candidate will:
    ? Teach courses at undergraduate with respect to Digital Arts Theory.
    ? Supervise postgraduate students (Honours, MA, PhD).
    ? Participate in department and school committees and contribute to the broader intellectual life of Wits.
