The University of Pretoria’s Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, situated within the Faculty of Humanities, is inviting applications for the position of Lecturer. This academic role is based in the Humanities Dean’s Office and sits within a specialist centre that offers postgraduate, research-based training to students from a range of professional backgrounds. The Centre focuses on two interconnected fields: Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Early Childhood Intervention (ECI). The successful candidate will join a unit known for its experienced academic staff and its commitment to advancing knowledge and practice in communication support for individuals with complex communication needs, as well as early intervention strategies for young children.

The core responsibilities of the post are centred on postgraduate teaching and research. The Lecturer will be expected to engage in teaching, curriculum development, and programme coordination at postgraduate level, and to supervise postgraduate students in a manner consistent with the level of appointment. Research is a central component of the role, with the incumbent required to conduct research that contributes to the Centre’s research profile, publish in accredited peer-reviewed journals, and present at national and international conferences. In addition, the Lecturer will perform academic and administrative duties as directed by the Centre’s Director, participate in the Centre’s strategic initiatives around teaching, research, and community engagement, and contribute to transdisciplinary collaborations in both teaching and research. This reflects the Centre’s emphasis on multiprofessional training and its broader mission to support inclusive communication and early childhood development.

To be considered for this position, applicants must hold a PhD in Augmentative and Alternative Communication or Early Childhood Intervention. They must also be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Speech-Language Pathologist or Occupational Therapist in the independent practitioner category, or be registered with a related professional body. Evidence of research productivity is required, including publications in accredited journals, book chapters, books, or similar outputs, as well as conference presentations. Demonstrated postgraduate supervision experience is also a minimum requirement. In terms of competencies, the ideal candidate will have professional practice experience as a therapist or educator in the relevant field, the ability to train multiprofessional postgraduate students, and the capacity to lecture in at least one, but preferably both, of the fields of AAC and ECI. A clear and demonstrable research focus is essential.

Preference will be given to candidates who bring added advantages, such as demonstrated experience in postgraduate lecturing and supervision, and a successful track record in securing research funding.
