This position offers an opportunity to contribute to agricultural education and skills development within the Western Cape Government’s Department of Agriculture, based at the Elsenburg campus. As a Lecturer in Agronomy, the successful candidate will be responsible for shaping the next generation of agricultural professionals by delivering both theoretical and practical instruction. The role is central to the department’s broader mandate of supporting sustainable farming practices and improving agricultural productivity in the region, particularly through the transfer of knowledge related to crop production and pasture management.

The ideal candidate must hold an appropriate four-year BSc degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent or higher qualification, and have at least three years of relevant professional experience. A valid Code B or higher driving licence is required, although applicants with disabilities that restrict driving ability may still be considered if they have reasonable access to transport. Beyond these formal requirements, the role demands a proven working knowledge of agronomy production systems, pasture management, and the cultivation of vegetable and alternative crops suited to the Western Cape. Strong presentation skills, verbal and written communication abilities, computer literacy, and leadership qualities are essential. The ability to plan, organise, and deliver formal training is also a key competency, as the lecturer will be expected to engage with students in both classroom and practical settings.

The core duties involve preparing lesson plans and presenting practical, theoretical, and short courses to students. The lecturer will also be responsible for the ongoing renewal and development of course material and study guides, ensuring that content remains current and relevant. Assessment forms a significant part of the role, including compiling question papers and memorandums for examinations, as well as marking and evaluating student performance. Administrative responsibilities are also attached to the post, requiring efficient record-keeping and coordination. In addition, the lecturer must stay abreast of applicable prescripts, policies, procedures, technologies, and new developments in the agronomy subject field, so that teaching reflects the latest industry standards and research.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews scheduled by the department, as well as the submission of duly completed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. Failure to provide these documents timeously, without reasonable justification, may result in disqualification from the process. All shortlisted applicants will also undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise measuring technical and generic suitability for the post, and an integrity assessment relating to ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for reference checks, which may include enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. Applications are only accepted online, and technical support is available during business hours for those experiencing difficulties with the system. This is a demanding but rewarding role for an experienced agronomy professional who is passionate about education and the agricultural sector.
