This position offers an opportunity to join the Western Cape government’s Facility Management component as part of the laundry services team, with five posts available across the Tygerberg Laundry and Lentegeur Laundry facilities. Based at the head office in Cape Town, the role is essential to the smooth operation of a central laundry setting that supports public healthcare institutions. As a Laundry Aid, you will be part of a dedicated team responsible for ensuring that clean, properly processed linen is available where it is needed, contributing directly to hygiene standards and patient care behind the scenes.
To be considered for this role, candidates must have basic literacy and numeracy skills, which are necessary for understanding work instructions, completing simple records, and communicating effectively within the team. In addition, applicants need appropriate laundry and linen experience gained in a central laundry environment. This means familiarity with the workflow of large-scale laundry operations, including handling soiled linen, operating industrial machines, and maintaining quality standards. The job also carries an inherent requirement to be physically fit, as the work involves manual labour such as lifting, loading, unloading, and standing for extended periods. This is a hands-on role that demands stamina and reliability.
The main duties cover the full cycle of laundry processing. You will be responsible for washing, drying, folding, and ironing linen, as well as loading and unloading washing machines and tumble dryers. You will also assist with the mixing of chemicals, ensuring that detergents and other agents are prepared correctly for each load. Quality monitoring is a key part of the job, meaning you will check that linen comes out clean, intact, and ready for use. Another important duty involves emptying soiled linen bags, sorting the contents, counting items, sealing bags, and stacking them for dispatch. You will also help prepare linen for the ironers and folding area, and you must keep your work area clean and orderly at all times. These tasks require attention to detail, teamwork, and a commitment to workplace safety and hygiene.
This is an OSD-graded post within the public service, and the remuneration package is aligned with government salary scales. Interested applicants should note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post, and any request for payment should be treated as fraudulent. For further details about the role, enquiries may be directed to the named contact person at the facility. This vacancy is advertised through the provincial circular system, and prospective candidates are encouraged to review the full application instructions before submitting their details. If you have the required laundry experience and are physically capable of handling the demands of a central laundry, this position offers stable employment within a vital public service function.
