The Office of the Chief Justice is seeking a Junior Systems Tester to join its National Office in Midrand, contributing to the quality assurance and software testing functions that underpin the reliability of the organisation’s ICT systems. This entry- to mid-level position is ideal for an IT professional with a solid foundational understanding of software development lifecycles, testing methodologies, and quality management, who is ready to support the delivery of accurate, functional, and user-friendly systems. The successful appointee will become part of a technical team focused on verifying that software applications meet their intended requirements, perform correctly, and support strategic decision-making within the judiciary environment.

Applicants must hold a National Diploma in Information Technology, Computer Science, or an equivalent qualification at NQF level six, recognised by SAQA. A minimum of two years of relevant experience in the field is required. A valid driver’s licence is noted as an added advantage, which may be beneficial for site visits or coordination tasks. The role demands a blend of technical and soft skills, including a strong understanding of programming, software and hardware testing, and project management. Knowledge of the Corporate Governance of ICT Policy Framework, test methodologies related to Waterfall and Agile SDLC implementations, and Batho Pele Principles is essential. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate problem-solving and analytical ability, sound communication and interpersonal skills, computer literacy, planning, organising, and presentation skills, alongside report writing and time management capabilities.

In terms of day-to-day responsibilities, the Junior Systems Tester will be actively involved in measuring and reporting on testing effectiveness. This includes collecting raw data on the number of defects per release, build, or cycle, calculating average defects per functional area, and measuring the percentage of an application’s code or functionality covered by automated tests. The role also supports efforts to assess how quickly automated testing identifies defects and how long full test suites take to run. Beyond metrics, the incumbent will update and maintain lists of testable requirements, assist in coordinating test case development, ensure system requirements align with test cases, and maintain test scripts and documentation. After deployment, the tester will facilitate verification of results and monitor performance across development cycles, analysing delays and tracking team productivity trends.

A key part of the role involves determining non-conformances and supporting quality management processes for systems. The tester will verify that systems meet requirements and function correctly, assess whether data trends contribute to process improvement, product innovation, and cost reduction, and help ensure that software results enable management to make informed strategic decisions. The position also requires identifying and reporting potential issues that could affect end-users, analysing and escalating software defects to the appropriate team members, and supporting continuous software testing integration to confirm that systems remain functional. This is a hands-on, detail-oriented role within a public-sector environment, and the organisation will give preference to candidates in line with its Employment Equity goals.
