The Department of Correctional Services is advertising two Junior Developer positions within its System Development Infrastructure directorate, based at the National Head Office. These roles are appointed under the Public Service Act and form part of the department’s internal technical capacity to build, maintain and improve both internet and intranet systems. As a junior developer, you would be joining a team responsible for the full lifecycle of web-based applications and internal platforms, from writing new code to monitoring existing systems and ensuring they run reliably. The position is an entry-level but hands-on role, requiring someone who can immediately contribute to development tasks while growing their skills within a government environment.

To qualify, you need a recognised National Diploma or Degree in Information Technology, coupled with one to two years of practical working knowledge of software development. Experience specifically in developing intranet and internet websites is required, along with familiarity with basic coding languages such as XML, XSL, HTML, JavaScript, VB Script, Visual Basic, COM, ASP, C# and SQL. While not mandatory, knowledge of databases such as Oracle and MS SQL will be an added advantage. You must also hold a valid driver’s licence. Beyond technical skills, the role demands a set of core competencies and personal attributes, including technical knowledge, training in telephone etiquette and image projection, strong verbal and written communication, good interpersonal relations, effective time management, teamwork, problem-solving and analytical thinking. The department is looking for someone who is accountable, committed, disciplined, flexible, punctual, respectful, self-confident, and who demonstrates integrity, honesty and professionalism. A solid understanding of the Public Service policy and legislative framework, as well as a service delivery and client orientation, is also essential.

The main duties are varied and cover the entire development process. You will develop and publish website content, write stable and maintainable code, and look after internet and intranet maintenance. This includes writing and maintaining code, monitoring the technical performance of internal systems, debugging code, and producing system documentation. You will also maintain and customise existing application systems, analyse and implement new requirements, and contribute to developing future application systems. Ensuring the quality of delivered solutions is a key responsibility, alongside managing resources and managing performance information. These duties require an individual who can balance day-to-day operational fixes with longer-term development projects, all within the standards and frameworks of the public service. Applicants should note that this is a structured government position with two posts available, and the selection process will prioritise candidates who meet both the technical and behavioural requirements outlined above.
