This vacancy offers four separate IT Technician positions within the Teacher Development and Learning Institutions directorate of the Eastern Cape Department of Education, each based at a distinct specialist institute: the Maths & Science Institute, the Language & Social Science Institute, the Technical & Vocational Institute, and the Leadership & Management Institute. The role is central to ensuring that all technological aspects of the department, including schools, function effectively and efficiently, with a focus on supporting both administrative systems and the learning environment. As an OSD-graded post at Level 07, the position requires a blend of hands-on technical skill, user support, and system administration across a wide range of educational and administrative platforms.

To be considered, applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate supplemented by A+ and N+ certifications, or alternatively a National Diploma in Information Technology. A minimum of three years of practical experience working as a technician within an ICT environment is essential, and a valid driver's licence is required, as the role may involve travel to schools and district offices. The successful candidate will be expected to perform an array of tasks related to computer systems, hardware, and software at all levels of the department.

The core duties are extensive and include the configuration and technical or network support of critical government systems such as BAS, PERSAL, EXAMS, EMIS, and SASAMS. The technician will also be responsible for Microsoft operating systems, applications, and Office 365 email setup and configuration, as well as setting up school networks for both teachers and learners. Day-to-day responsibilities involve installing and configuring hardware and software components to ensure usability, troubleshooting and repairing or replacing damaged hardware, and upgrading entire systems to enable compatible software across all computers. Security is a key focus, with the installation and upgrading of anti-virus software to ensure protection at the user level, alongside performing tests and evaluations on new software and hardware. The role also serves as the first line of support for error reporting, requiring the technician to provide direct assistance to users, establish good working relationships with all departments and colleagues, and manage technical documentation. Regular system backups, ensuring the smooth running of all IT systems including print services and email provision, and compiling technical reports for Districts or Head Office round out the responsibilities.

This is an employment equity targeted position, with the department aiming to achieve equitable representation across race and gender in line with its Employment Equity Plan, although applications from all racial groups are welcome. Selected candidates will be subjected to a personnel suitability check, including criminal record, citizenship, financial or asset record, qualification, and previous employment verification. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of their qualifications and other relevant documents before the interview date, and all appointments are subject to a probation period. Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates only, and those not contacted within six months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. The department also reserves the right to amend, review, or withdraw the advertised posts if necessary.
