The Eastern Cape Department of Education is advertising five IT Technician posts focused on Supply Chain Management and ICT, spread across four district locations: Alfred Nzo West, Chris Hani East, Sarah Baartman, and Nelson Mandela Bay, with the latter accommodating two positions. These roles sit within the department’s broader commitment to keeping all technological systems operational, not only at administrative offices but also within schools across the province. The technician will be responsible for ensuring that every aspect of the department’s technology environment runs smoothly and efficiently, supporting both educators and administrative staff in their daily functions.
To be considered, applicants need a National Senior Certificate combined with A+ and N+ certifications, or alternatively a National Diploma in Information Technology. In addition, a minimum of three years of hands-on experience working as a technician in an ICT environment is required, along with a valid driver’s licence, as travel between sites may be necessary. The role demands a solid understanding of both hardware and software systems, as well as the ability to work independently and troubleshoot under pressure.
The core duties are broad and technically demanding. The technician will configure and provide network support for critical departmental systems, including BAS, PERSAL, EXAMS, EMIS, and SASAMS. They will also handle Microsoft operating systems, applications, and Office 365 email setup and configuration. A significant part of the work involves setting up school networks for teachers and learners, installing and configuring hardware and software components, and ensuring that all systems are usable and secure. Troubleshooting hardware and software issues is a daily responsibility, as is repairing or replacing damaged equipment. The technician will also upgrade systems to maintain compatibility, install and update anti-virus software, and perform tests and evaluations on new technology before it is rolled out. As the first line of support, they will respond to error reports from users, build strong working relationships with colleagues and departments, and maintain clear technical documentation. Regular system backups, oversight of print services, email provision, and the smooth running of all IT systems are also central to the role. Additionally, the technician must prepare and submit technical reports for the districts, ensuring that management has accurate information on system performance and challenges.
This is an OSD-graded position with a structured salary range. The department has noted that all shortlisted candidates will be required to produce certified copies of qualifications and other relevant documents before the interview, and successful applicants will undergo personnel suitability checks, including criminal record verification, citizenship checks, and qualification verification. Depending on the post level, candidates may also be required to complete pre-entry assessments, including practical exercises and integrity testing. The department is committed to employment equity and affirmative action, with specific targets aimed at achieving balanced representation across race and gender. Females and persons with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply. Appointments are subject to a probation period, and the department reserves the right to amend, review, or withdraw posts if doing so serves the best interests of the organisation.
