This permanent IT Technician position is based at the Randfontein Campus of Western TVET College and forms part of the institution’s broader ICT support structure under a PERSAL appointment. The role is central to ensuring that the campus’s computer systems, networks, and related technologies operate reliably for both administrative and academic functions. As an IT Technician, you will act as a key point of contact for technical assistance, helping to maintain a stable and secure computing environment across the college.
To be considered for this role, you must hold a Matric or Grade 12 certificate together with a recognised three-year National Diploma or Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a closely related field. In addition, you need at least one to two years of relevant work experience in information technology. A valid driver’s licence is required, and you must be fully computer literate. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of IT hardware and software, desktop and networking environments, voice communication infrastructure, IT help desk operations, and program installations. You should be comfortable providing first and second line support and have working knowledge of systems such as MIS, BAS, PERSAL, COLTECH, and other related desktop applications. Strong communication, time management, report writing, problem solving, client orientation, planning, organising, team leadership, and people management skills are essential, as is the ability to interact effectively with external service providers.
Your main duties will involve setting up user accounts on desktops and laptops, including mailbox and Windows configuration, unlocking passwords using Admin Pack, and installing or configuring desktops, printers, and data projectors. You will help maintain a service catalogue and standard operating procedures, perform backups, provide anti-virus support, and manage offsite storage. Troubleshooting and diagnosis of technical faults will be a daily responsibility, along with ensuring the availability of email, internet, and application services on workstations, as well as maintaining connectivity to the transversal mainframe system. You will carry out installation, configuration, testing, and upgrade tasks that may require research and analysis, verify network cabling, and perform both PC and software installations. The role also includes providing technical support for the configuration, installation, repair, and replacement of computers, printers, and telephones, and assisting with data migration during computer setup. Beyond day-to-day support, you will render IT information management services, help plan and develop computer-based information systems, maintain databases to ensure data integrity and security, assist with ICT-related project activities, and contribute to the development, implementation, and monitoring of ICT policies.
Applicants should note that all applications must be accompanied by a signed and fully completed new Z83 form, available from any public service department or the DPSA website, as well as a comprehensive CV listing at least three contactable references. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of original documents and academic records before the interview, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation report. All shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to test technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. Successful candidates will be subjected to vetting and financial disclosure processes, including criminal record, citizenship, qualification, and employment verification. Western TVET College is an equal opportunities employer and encourages people living with disabilities to apply. Incomplete Z83 forms will be disqualified, and if you have not been contacted within six months of the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful.
