IT TECHNICIAN REF NO: DHET 39/09/2026 Region: Limpopo Regional Office

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is seeking an IT Technician to join its Limpopo Regional Office in Polokwane. This role is central to maintaining the regional office’s day-to-day ICT operations, with a strong focus on Local Area Network (LAN) and desktop support. The technician will act as the first point of contact for users experiencing technical issues, ensuring that hardware, software and network services remain functional and secure. The position is graded at a general administrative level and offers an opportunity to contribute to the broader public service environment.

To be considered, applicants must hold a recognised National Diploma at NQF Level 6 in Information Technology or an equivalent qualification, together with at least one to two years of practical experience as an IT Technician. Industry certifications such as MCSE, MCITP, A+, N+, Security+, ITIL, and familiarity with governance frameworks like COBIT 5 will strengthen an application. The role demands sound communication and problem-solving abilities, strong customer relationship skills, and a working knowledge of network administration and IT service management.

The core duties involve providing LAN and desktop support: creating user accounts on desktops and laptops, unlocking passwords using Admin Pack, setting up printers and data projectors, configuring mainframe applications, and assisting with data migration during computer setup. The technician will also provide telephonic support, troubleshoot reported issues, gather and analyse user ICT problems, and support documented Level 8 and Level 9/10 configurations in line with ITIL processes. Additional responsibilities include delivering first-level helpdesk support and performing any other related tasks as directed by the supervisor.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a competency exercise as part of the selection process. The department also applies personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, qualification and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
